Hoi An ancient shipwreck excavation planned for 2027
Authorities in Da Nang have announced plans to excavate an ancient shipwreck that has been exposed on the coast near Hoi An for nearly three years. Tan Van Vuong, Deputy Director of the Da Nang Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, stated during a press conference that the Hoi An World Cultural Heritage Conservation Center is working with experts to finalize documentation.
The excavation is expected to take place in 2027, once weather conditions stabilize. Following the process, the vessel will be relocated and preserved. The shipwreck, estimated to be approximately 15 meters long and 3 meters wide, was revealed due to coastal erosion and storm surges. Local fishermen suggest the vessel may be a 'ghe bau', a type of merchant sailing vessel potentially constructed from rare black ebony wood.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism previously noted that preserving the artifact at its current location is not feasible, as it sits on a public beach behind a tourist resort. Consequently, relocation is deemed necessary for its long-term protection.
