Hoi An heritage sites face severe degradation

A 2026 survey by the Hoi An World Cultural Heritage Conservation Center has identified 28 heritage sites in the Hoi An ancient town experiencing degradation. Among these, 10 sites are classified as severely degraded and 13 are heavily degraded.

Nine specific cases have been proposed for dismantling because they no longer possess the structural integrity to support themselves. Common issues reported across streets such as Nguyen Thai Hoc, Bach Dang, and Phan Chau Trinh include leaking yin-yang tile roofs, termite damage to wooden components, rotting beams, and cracked or leaning walls.

Specific structural risks were noted at several addresses, including a house on Nguyen Thai Hoc street with a high risk of collapse and another on Phan Chau Trinh street where an eastern wall has tilted approximately 0.2 meters. The findings highlight an urgent need for heritage preservation and safety measures to protect residents and the historical integrity of the area.
