Hokkaido autumn travel highlights Biei hills and wind farms

Autumn offers distinct landscapes and experiences for travelers in Hokkaido, characterized by changing seasonal colors and unique natural scenery.

In the Biei region, the Patchwork Hills present a landscape of rolling hills and diverse crops that create a quilt-like appearance. Notable landmarks include the Ken and Mary Tree, the Mild Seven Hill, and the Christmas Tree Hill. The area is also home to Takushinkan, a photography gallery showcasing the work of Shinzo Maeda.

For those traveling by road, the Oron Line and Mikuni Pass provide significant views. The Otonrui Wind Farm, featuring 28 large turbines, is a major landmark, though replacement construction is scheduled to begin in April 2027, which will significantly alter the current landscape. Other seasonal highlights include the autumn foliage at Mikuni Pass, the vast agricultural fields of the Tokachi region, and local salmon delicacies.
