Japan potato imports face opposition over US trade requests

An online petition opposing the lifting of import restrictions on raw American potatoes has surpassed 170,000 signatures. The movement aims to protect Japan's domestic agricultural foundation amidst declining food self-sufficiency rates.

Critics and agricultural groups, including the JA Hokkaido Central Association, express grave concerns regarding the potential introduction of the potato cyst nematode. This pest is highly resilient and could cause irreversible damage to Japanese soil and potato production. While the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries maintains that no final decision has been made, negotiations between the Japanese and U.S. governments appear to be entering final stages following requests from U.S. authorities to accelerate the process.

Opponents also cite risks regarding post-harvest pesticides and genetically modified crops, arguing that the move could undermine national food security.
