Hokkaido pumpkins: Culinary benefits and cultivation

The Hokkaido pumpkin, named after the Japanese island, is highlighted as a versatile autumn crop. Belonging to the Cucurbita maxima species, these pumpkins typically weigh between 0.5 and 1.5 kilograms and are characterized by a deep orange or reddish skin.

A primary advantage for gardeners and cooks is that the skin is edible; it softens during cooking and contains high levels of vitamins and trace elements, including beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A. The flesh is noted for its mild, slightly nutty, and sweet flavor.
