Holbox drug bust results in arrests of seven Cubans and a gang clash

On 28 June 2026, security forces in the tourist island of Holbox, Quintana Roo, responded to a shooting that the state government later described as an internal dispute among members of a narco‑menudeo cell, not an attack on a Navy base. One suspect was detained with two short firearms and a dose of drugs; two other individuals were injured and also found with narcotics. All three were taken to medical facilities in Kantunilkín and Cancún and placed under the jurisdiction of the Public Ministry.

In a related operation on the same day, seven Cuban nationals were arrested after police discovered large quantities of marijuana, cocaine, crack and ecstasy in a public area of Holbox. The raid, carried out by the Grupo Centurión of the Secretariat of Security together with the Navy, Army and the National Guard, seized dozens of drug‑filled bags and several storage items. The detainees and evidence were handed over to the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Narco‑Menudeo for further investigation.
