Holiday cactus care and blooming guide
Holiday cacti, including the Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter varieties, require specific care to thrive and bloom. While the Thanksgiving and Christmas cacti belong to the same family, they are distinguished by their blooming periods and leaf margins. Thanksgiving cacti typically bloom from November through December and feature serrated edges, whereas Christmas cacti bloom from December into January and have rounded margins.
The Easter cactus belongs to a different plant group entirely, blooming around Easter with more scalloped leaves. As epiphytic plants, these cacti naturally grow on rocks or trees rather than in soil, meaning they require well-draining environments and should not sit in stagnant water.
To encourage blooming, these 'short day' plants require a period of winter dormancy. This process is triggered by manipulating four key factors: nourishment, moisture, light, and temperature. For indoor cultivation, providing bright, indirect light is ideal, as direct sunlight can burn the foliage. Watering frequency varies based on humidity and temperature, but generally, plants should be watered when the soil dries out.
