Holiday Inn guest hospitalized after bed bug infestation in Exeter

Nicola Jenkins, a 46-year-old woman, required emergency medical treatment after suffering over 100 bed bug bites during a business trip at a Holiday Inn Express in Exeter, United Kingdom.

After her second night at the hotel, Jenkins discovered approximately 40 dead bed bugs under the sheets and woke up with welts on her face, neck, arms, and torso. Although hotel staff offered a refund, a room change, and complimentary amenities, Jenkins chose to move to a different hotel.

Following the incident, Jenkins reported intense itching and a burning sensation on her skin. When antihistamines failed to provide relief, she sought medical attention at an emergency department on October 19 due to severe swelling and redness. Doctors diagnosed a serious reaction to the bites and prescribed steroids. A spokesperson for the hotel stated they are investigating the incident.
