Holland Rijnland housing seekers face loss of waiting time over missed fees
Starting September 1, housing seekers in the Holland Rijnland region will lose their accumulated waiting time if they fail to pay an annual registration fee of 7.50 euros. The new rules implemented by the housing association collective aim to prevent ‘system pollution,’ as unpaid fees were previously used as a method to deregister.
Under the new policy, the previous safety net—which allowed for provisional deregistration and the opportunity to rectify missed payments—will be abolished. Additionally, the right to appeal a deregistration will no longer be available. While the organization states that registrants will receive email and SMS reminders six weeks and fourteen days before the deadline, the responsibility for payment rests entirely with the individual.
The change has sparked significant political opposition. The Socialist Party (SP) in Alphen aan den Rijn and Leiden has launched a petition, arguing that the measure is not proportional. Critics contend that a single administrative error should not result in the immediate loss of years of seniority, especially given the increasing pressure on the housing market.
