Hollys and Burger King report major customer data breaches

Major food service brands in South Korea and Japan have reported significant data breaches following unauthorized third-party access to their membership systems.

In South Korea, coffee chain Hollys confirmed that personal information belonging to customers who joined the membership program before February 11, 2020, was leaked. The breach is estimated to have occurred between September 3 and October 7. Compromised data includes IDs, passwords, names, dates of birth, phone numbers, addresses, and email addresses. Hollys has urged customers to change their passwords immediately and remain vigilant against phishing attempts.

In Japan, Burger King operator BK Japan reported that approximately 11.18 million members' data was leaked due to unauthorized access between October 2 and October 7. The leaked information includes names, dates of birth, phone numbers, email addresses, gender, and residence areas. While the breach is extensive, the company stated that credit card numbers and login passwords were not compromised, as they are not stored within their system. BK Japan has reported the incident to the Personal Information Protection Commission and is working with external experts to investigate the cause.
