Hollywood box office reaches $10 billion in 2026 as theaters rebound
Summer 2026 has become one of the strongest theatrical seasons in recent memory. Box‑office revenue is running almost on par with 2019 levels, and domestic ticket sales are projected to exceed the $10 billion milestone for the first time since before the COVID‑19 pandemic. By late June the summer total was $1.8 billion, while full‑year domestic earnings had already hit $4.4 billion, about 15 % behind the 2019 pace.
The recovery is driven by a diverse slate of hits. Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” and “Toy Story 5” are drawing large audiences, alongside Marvel’s “Spider‑Man, Brand New Day” and smaller titles such as the low‑budget thriller “Obsession” (budget $750,000) and the horror film “Backrooms,” both posting hundreds of millions in worldwide receipts. Gen Z moviegoers are leading the revival, with 87 % reporting at least one theater visit in the past year.
At the same time, many of the year’s best films are already available for streaming on services such as Netflix, Paramount+, HBO Max, Prime Video and Peacock, offering viewers instant access to titles that were theatrical releases just months earlier.
