Hollywood box office sees strongest summer since pandemic

Hollywood has experienced its most successful summer season since the pandemic, signaling a strong recovery for the film industry. According to data from Rentrak, box office sales in the United States and Canada reached $4.6 billion between the first weekend of May and August 30, representing a 26% increase compared to the previous summer.

The growth was driven by a diverse mix of content, including blockbusters like ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, original films such as ‘The Odyssey’, and sequels like Pixar’s ‘Toy Story 5’. Notably, horror films like ‘Backrooms’ and ‘Obsession’ attracted significant numbers of Generation Z viewers, while titles such as ‘Michael’ and ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ drew large female audiences.

Analysts suggest this momentum could continue through the end of the year with highly anticipated releases like ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Dune: Part Three’. Some projections estimate that total domestic box office revenue could exceed $10 billion by 2026, a milestone not reached since 2019.
