Hollywood Faces Competition from Rapidly Growing Creator Economy

Hollywood has long dominated global entertainment, generating about $50.9 billion in annual revenue and employing roughly 407,000 workers in the United States. However, the emerging creator economy is now eclipsing the traditional film industry. The global creator economy is valued at $310.4 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $1.345 trillion by 2033. Around 200 million people worldwide consider themselves creators, with 50 million producing content for an audience of five billion across platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and Facebook.

These digital creators monetize their work through advertising, subscriptions, product promotions and digital sales, providing a viable income stream for millions. In comparison, Hollywood’s turnover is modest, and the creator economy’s rapid expansion is reshaping how audiences consume audiovisual content and how revenue is generated in the entertainment sector.
