Holne Community Shop appeals for support to ensure future
The Holne Community Shop in South Hams is appealing for local support to ensure its long-term sustainability. Despite an annual turnover of approximately £170,000, the shop generates only about £5,000 in profit.
The establishment faces several financial and operational challenges, including rising costs, a shortage of volunteers, and an outstanding loan of roughly £43,000. Manager Paul Arrowsmith emphasized the necessity of sustainability, stating the shop cannot afford to operate at a loss.
Run largely by 18 volunteers who save the shop over £30,000 annually in wages, the store provides groceries, local produce, and household essentials. The shop previously avoided closure 15 years ago when the community raised over £80,000 to prevent the building from being converted into a private residence.
