Hololive VTuber Shiranui Flare warns against AI-generated thumbnails

Hololive VTuber Shiranui Flare has issued a public request to creators of “clip videos” (re-edited highlights) to stop using AI-generated illustrations for video thumbnails. On September 22, she expressed concern on X that AI-generated images are increasingly being used to represent her, despite looking like a different person. She described the use of such images as “fraudulent” because they do not accurately reflect her identity, even if the content of the video is hers.

Flare urged creators to use her official character art instead and explicitly stated that she does not permit her likeness or official art to be used for AI training. This issue highlights a growing tension in digital content creation between “clickability” and authenticity. While AI tools can quickly generate eye-catching, exaggerated thumbnails to drive views, they often create a version of a persona that deviates from the official character design.

This development occurs as YouTube continues to integrate generative AI features into its creator tools, such as thumbnail generation and A/B testing. While YouTube’s guidelines treat AI as a production aid, the case of Shiranui Flare underscores the potential for AI to misrepresent digital identities, particularly in the VTuber industry where visual consistency is central to a creator's brand.
