Holy See advocates for peaceful nuclear energy and AI ethics

During the 70th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, the Holy See advocated for the peaceful use of nuclear technology to promote peace, integral development, and the common good. Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, representing the Holy See, emphasized that scientific progress must be guided by ethical principles.

Gallagher noted that peaceful nuclear applications can significantly benefit health, food production, and energy generation, particularly in developing nations. He stressed that the right to use such technology carries responsibilities, including the commitment of non-nuclear weapon states to refrain from acquiring them. The Holy See also called for rigorous IAEA safeguards to ensure transparency and international cooperation. Additionally, the address touched upon the need to direct artificial intelligence toward the common good and reflected on the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster as a reminder of the importance of nuclear safety.
