Home Assistant 2026.8 Update Simplifies Setup for New Users
The open‑source smart‑home platform Home Assistant released version 2026.8, focusing on a more beginner‑friendly experience. New installations of Home Assistant OS now use the standard HTTP port 80, eliminating the need to specify the previous port 8123, while existing installations keep their current settings but can be changed manually.
The update removes the “advanced”, “expert” and “developer‑tools” labels, replacing them with plain language descriptions to reduce intimidation. The Home Assistant Cloud interface has been reorganised so each function (remote access, backups, voice assistants, companion app, etc.) has its own dedicated page. Entity IDs for automations, scripts and dashboard items are now more flexible, allowing custom naming schemes.
Additional integrations such as Google Health, Fitbit Air and Midea air‑conditioners/air‑purifiers have been added. A safety fallback automatically reverts configuration changes after five minutes if they fail. Device management has been adjusted so devices from different integrations are no longer merged into a single entry, preserving each integration’s own device record.
