Home Assistant users can repurpose old USB gadgets for smart home automation

Users of the Home Assistant smart home platform can repurpose obsolete USB gadgets and electronic components to enhance their automation systems. Old hardware, such as discarded Zigbee keys, Bluetooth dongles, and ESP32 development boards, can be integrated to extend network coverage and add new functionalities.

Specifically, older Zigbee keys like the CC2531 can be used as repeaters or to create secondary networks for remote areas like garages. ESP32 boards can serve as Bluetooth proxies, receiving signals from smartphones and smartwatches and forwarding them to a central server. This allows for room-by-room presence detection by comparing signal strength across multiple distributed proxies.

DIY enthusiasts are also using 3D-printed enclosures to combine old USB chargers with ESP32 boards, creating discreet, wall-plug-style sensors that can trigger automations such as lighting or climate control based on a person's location in the house.
