Home battery storage options expand beyond Tesla Powerwall
Homeowners are increasingly seeking alternatives to the Tesla Powerwall as they look for diverse backup energy storage solutions to combat severe weather and rising electricity demands. Companies such as Anker, BLUETTI, Enphase, FranklinWH, GM Energy, Sigenergy, and Villara offer various systems featuring modular capacity, EV integration, and off-grid functionality.
In some cases, even substantial battery setups are being supplemented with traditional hardware. One Pennsylvania homeowner with a 30-kWh battery and solar array is considering a $1,000 propane generator to provide peace of mind during extreme weather events, such as snowstorms or hurricanes, when solar production may be limited.
Technical experts also advise caution regarding system configuration. Off-grid specialist Mike Solar Garage warns against attempting to build 48-volt systems by wiring 12-volt or 24-volt battery strings in series. He notes that this can lead to synchronization issues between battery management systems, increased maintenance, and potential battery failure, recommending native 48-volt lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) banks instead.
