Home composting and Bokashi methods reduce organic waste
Home composting is highlighted as an effective method for reducing organic waste and improving soil health for gardens and urban orchards. By combining nitrogen-rich green materials, such as fruit and vegetable scraps, with carbon-rich brown materials like dry leaves or cardboard, citizens can transform kitchen and garden waste into natural fertilizer.
For urban environments with limited space, the Japanese Bokashi method offers an alternative. Unlike traditional aerobic composting, Bokashi uses anaerobic fermentation in airtight containers. This process utilizes an inoculant of efficient microorganisms to ferment organic matter in approximately two weeks, preventing odors and pests, making it suitable for apartment living.
