Home cooling and water reuse tips for intense heat

During periods of intense heat, homeowners can utilize air conditioning condensation and strategic fan placement to manage indoor temperatures and promote sustainability.

Water produced by air conditioning units is a natural byproduct of the cooling process, where moisture in the air condenses on the evaporator's cold coils. While this water is not potable due to potential contamination from dust, fungi, or microorganisms, it can be reused for non-consumption tasks such as cleaning floors, washing outdoor areas, flushing toilets, or watering resistant ornamental plants. To ensure safety, collection containers should be kept clean and covered.

To improve thermal comfort without constant air conditioning use, architect Leonardo Rogel suggests placing fans near windows at night when external temperatures drop. This method pulls cooler outside air into the room rather than just circulating warm indoor air. For maximum effectiveness, cross-ventilation should be encouraged by ensuring an air exit is available on the opposite side of the room and keeping heavy curtains away from the fan to allow unobstructed airflow.
