Home environments impact physical health and mental well-being

The health and well-being of individuals are closely linked to the domestic environment. Addressing physical hazards and optimizing living spaces can significantly impact overall health.

Potential environmental risks include lead-based paint and pest infestations. In the United States, approximately 3.6 million households with children face dangers from lead-based paint, particularly in homes built before the late 1970s. Lead exposure is linked to cognitive deficits and behavioral issues in young children. Additionally, pests such as cockroaches and mice can exacerbate allergies, asthma, and other health issues if not managed promptly.

Beyond physical hazards, the psychological impact of a home environment is significant. Creating a sanctuary through intentional design—such as using layered, warm lighting, decluttering, and establishing dedicated spaces for relaxation—can serve as a tool for self-care and mental rest.
