Homemade fertilizer methods for blooming Christmas cacti
To encourage Christmas cacti (Schlumbergera) to produce abundant flower buds, a homemade two-ingredient fertilizer can be prepared using banana peels and dried coffee grounds. The mixture, combined with filtered or rested water, provides essential potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen to strengthen roots, leaves, and stems.
To prepare the solution, banana peels and three tablespoons of thoroughly dried coffee grounds are soaked in one liter of water for 24 hours in a dark, dry place. The mixture should be applied once every two weeks until buds appear, but application must stop once flowering begins to prevent bud drop.
Other critical care factors for blooming include temperature control and light exposure. The plant requires a cool period of 13-15°C during September and October to enter its resting state, followed by temperatures around 20°C once buds appear. Additionally, as a short-day plant, it requires 12-14 hours of uninterrupted darkness daily to regulate its blooming cycle.
