Home health care demand rises amid workforce and reimbursement challenges

The healthcare industry is experiencing a significant shift as more patients transition from acute-care settings to home-based care. Medicare has proposed a 2.4% payment increase for home health agencies to address this trend, reflecting a growing recognition of the importance of home-based medical services.

However, industry experts warn that funding increases may not be sufficient to address systemic challenges. Providers face rising labor costs, transportation expenses, and regulatory requirements. A critical obstacle remains the persistent shortage of qualified professionals, including nurses, therapists, and home health aides, necessary to meet increasing demand.

Additionally, there is a surge in demand for home infusion services, which include intravenous antibiotics, parenteral nutrition, and pain management. Some providers report a fivefold increase in these services over the last decade. This rapid transition from hospitals to homes is also placing logistical pressure on providers, who often receive much shorter notice regarding patient discharges than in the past.
