Home maintenance tips for winter heating and repairs
As colder weather approaches, experts recommend performing essential home maintenance to ensure heating systems function efficiently and to prevent costly damage.
For radiator maintenance, it is advised to bleed radiators starting from the ground floor and moving upwards. This process involves opening the valve slightly to release trapped air, which naturally rises. Starting downstairs ensures that residual air is systematically moved through the system rather than collecting in previously bled sections. Signs of air in a radiator include uneven heating, where the top is cold while the bottom is warm, or unusual noises like gurgling and clicking.
In mountainous regions, homeowners are cautioned against turning off heating completely in vacant properties. Rapid temperature drops can cause water in pipes to freeze and expand, leading to bursts and significant leaks that may go unnoticed for weeks.
General winter preparation should also include inspecting roofs for slipped tiles or leaks, clearing gutters, and checking for draughts and dampness to maintain energy efficiency and structural integrity.
