Home heating maintenance: Tips for radiator and boiler care
As temperatures drop, homeowners are advised to perform essential maintenance on heating systems to ensure efficiency and prevent damage.
A primary concern for radiators is trapped air, which can cause uneven heating—where the bottom is warm but the top remains cold—and unusual noises like gurgling or knocking. To resolve this, the heating should be turned off and the unit allowed to cool before using a specialized key to bleed the air from the valve. Once water begins to emerge, the valve should be closed immediately. Following bleeding, it is important to check the boiler pressure, as the process may cause a drop; many modern systems require a reading between 1 and 1.5 bar when cold, though manufacturer instructions should always be consulted.
Additionally, leaking radiators may stem from loose connections, faulty valves, or corroded components. While loose connections or simple air vent replacements are relatively inexpensive and manageable, persistent leaks or issues with the shut-off valves may require professional assistance. Checking the system for leaks and ensuring even heat distribution during the first use of the season is recommended to avoid more significant issues later.
