Home humidity and condensation risks

As temperatures drop, many households face increased indoor humidity, leading to condensation on windows and the potential growth of hazardous black mold. Common causes include cooking, drying laundry indoors, and poor air circulation.

A popular folk remedy involves placing a bowl of coarse salt on window sills to absorb moisture. While salt naturally attracts water, experts warn that this method has limited capacity and may not significantly reduce room-wide humidity levels.

Furthermore, using salt poses risks to window hardware. If salt or salty water comes into contact with metal fittings or mechanisms, it can accelerate corrosion and damage expensive window components. To prevent condensation, experts suggest addressing underlying issues such as poor external insulation, thermal bridges, or blocked air circulation caused by heavy curtains.
