Home humidity and mold prevention strategies for winter

As temperatures drop, indoor humidity, condensation, and mold become significant concerns for Italian households, impacting both health and energy costs. Moisture is often generated internally through daily activities such as breathing, cooking, showering, and drying laundry indoors. When windows remain closed during cold weather, this vapor settles on cold surfaces like glass and walls, leading to condensation and mold growth.

To manage these issues, experts from Enea and the World Health Organization suggest several practical steps. To prevent excessive moisture from laundry, using a high-speed spin cycle can extract more water. When drying clothes indoors, it is recommended to maintain a distance of 5–10 cm between garments and use hangers to improve air circulation. Placing drying racks approximately 30 cm from a radiator can accelerate evaporation without damaging fabrics.

Maintaining an ideal relative humidity level between 40% and 50% is crucial for rapid evaporation and preventing the formation of mold and unpleasant odors. Proper ventilation and avoiding the overlapping of clothes are also key to maintaining a healthy indoor environment.
