Home internet speed: Understanding download, upload, and latency

Determining the appropriate home internet speed depends on individual usage needs, balancing cost against performance. Internet speed is primarily defined by two metrics: download speed (receiving data) and upload speed (sending data). These are measured in megabits or gigabits per second (Mbps/Gbps). Because file sizes are measured in bytes, users must divide the bit rate by eight to calculate realistic download times. For example, a 300 Mbps connection provides approximately 37.5 MB per second.

On many wired connections, upload speeds are significantly lower than download speeds because bandwidth is shared and most consumer activities prioritize receiving data. Fiber optic connections typically mitigate this by offering symmetrical upload and download speeds. Additionally, latency, or ping, measures the responsiveness of a connection, which is critical for real-time activities like online gaming or video calls.

Usage requirements vary by activity. For instance, Netflix recommends at least 5 Mbps for 1080p streaming and 15 Mbps for 4K resolution. While 100 Mbps may suffice for small households, users should measure their actual needs to avoid paying for unnecessary speed upgrades.
