Home maintenance advice on structural cracks and insurance

Homeowners are advised to monitor structural integrity and insurance requirements during renovations and settling periods.

Structural engineer Mike Powell notes that wall cracks are common in newer homes due to primary consolidation, where the building settles into its surroundings. While vertical cracks are often normal, horizontal or diagonal cracks may indicate serious issues with the foundation, poor construction, or unstable soil. Homeowners should watch for cracks that expand or new ones that emerge.

Regarding renovations, the Verbraucherzentrale Sachsen-Anhalt warns that installing scaffolding can increase burglary risks by providing easy access to upper floors. Homeowners should notify their insurance providers about the presence of scaffolding, as failure to report this increased risk could lead to reduced or denied coverage in the event of a claim.
