Home maintenance: The importance of regular gutter cleaning
Regular maintenance of household gutters is essential to prevent structural damage. Accumulated debris such as leaves, dust, pollen, bird droppings, and roofing granules can create a sludge that blocks water flow.
When gutters are clogged, rainwater can overflow, causing water to run down the facade. This leads to unsightly staining and creates conditions conducive to the growth of algae and mold. In severe cases, water may penetrate under the roof, affecting wooden beams or the home's foundation. During winter, frozen water in clogged gutters can increase weight significantly, potentially causing the gutters to bend or detach entirely.
To avoid damage to the house facade, it is advised not to lean ladders directly against the gutters or new plaster, as the pressure can bend the guttering or damage the exterior finish.
