Home maintenance tips for cleaning curtains and pillows

Various methods are available for maintaining household items like curtains and pillows to ensure freshness and hygiene without constant heavy cleaning.

Curtains can be refreshed without removal by using vacuum cleaners with soft brushes or upholstery attachments to remove dust. For thin fabrics, adhesive lint rollers are effective. Steam cleaners can also be used to reduce odors and smooth wrinkles, provided the fabric label permits high temperatures and moisture. While shaking curtains outdoors can remove dust, vacuuming with an efficient filter is safer for individuals with allergies or asthma.

Pillows accumulate sweat, sebum, dead skin cells, and dust over time. While pillowcases should be washed weekly or bi-weekly, the pillows themselves should be thoroughly cleaned every three to six months, depending on the material. Using protective covers can help reduce the amount of moisture and allergens that reach the filling, but they do not replace the need for periodic washing.
