Home maintenance tips for washing machines and sinks

Common household odors in washing machines and sinks can often be resolved through simple maintenance and proper component management.

To address odors in washing machines, users should inspect the door seal for hair, lint, and moisture buildup. Cleaning the detergent drawer with warm water and a soft brush is also recommended. Additionally, checking the pump filter for debris is essential, though users should ensure the device is unplugged and any residual water is drained before opening the filter.

For sink odors, the primary cause is often the loss of the water barrier in the S-trap or U-bend pipe. Ensuring the pipe maintains a curve allows water to sit in the trap, blocking sewer gases. In infrequently used sinks, simply running water for a few minutes can replenish this barrier. Other causes include organic buildup, such as grease or soap residue, within the pipes or overflow holes.
