Home maintenance tips for winter heating and insulation
As the 2026-2027 heating season approaches, homeowners are advised to perform seasonal maintenance to improve energy efficiency and prevent pest intrusion.
Addressing foundation gaps, such as rim joists and sill plates, can simultaneously reduce heat loss and prevent rodents from entering homes. The National Pest Management Association estimates that approximately 21 million U.S. homes experience rodent invasions during the winter. To combat these issues, Sprayman has introduced a DIY insulation and pest block kit featuring closed-cell insulation foam designed to seal utility penetrations and foundation openings.
Additionally, winter preparation for garage doors is recommended to avoid mechanical failures caused by freezing temperatures. Cold weather can cause metal to contract and lubricants to thicken, putting extra pressure on springs, cables, rollers, and hinges. Experts suggest inspecting these components early to prevent jerky movement or grinding noises, noting that spring repairs should be handled by qualified technicians due to the high tension involved.
