Home maintenance tips for winter insulation and roof inspections

As autumn and winter approach, homeowners are advised to perform specific inspections to prevent heat loss and identify structural vulnerabilities.

Regarding roof maintenance, windy weather can reveal leaks that rain might not. Wind creates pressure differences, pushing air through gaps in the roof shell. Homeowners can inspect their attics by listening for whistling, rustling, or unusual tapping, and by feeling for drafts around chimneys, roof windows, and dormers. These signs often indicate areas where the roof is not airtight, even if it remains waterproof during rain.

To combat drafts at entryways, checking door seals is essential to prevent cold air from entering the home. A traditional method to supplement modern sealing is the use of heavy curtains or thick textiles hung behind doors. These act as an additional thermal barrier, slowing the flow of cold air and separating entrance areas from the heated interior of the house.
