Home Office pauses asylum housing plan in North Wales

The UK Home Office has paused plans to house asylum seekers in the redeveloped Gronant Institute in Flintshire following significant local opposition. The proposal involved using 13 of the 15 properties at the site to accommodate individuals awaiting asylum decisions.

Clwyd East MP Becky Gittins met with Home Office officials to address community concerns regarding the lack of prior public consultation and the potential strain on local infrastructure and amenities. Residents expressed frustration that the redevelopment, originally presented as an opportunity for local young people, was being repurposed for migrant housing without local input.

The Home Office’s accommodation partner, Clear Springs Ready Homes, sought to lease the properties from the developer. Local representatives, including community councillors, noted that the lack of transparency led to unrest in the village, including visits from anti-migrant groups. One migrant family was briefly moved into the property before being relocated due to the local reaction.
