Home renovations to support aging in place

To support aging in place, home renovations should focus on mobility and safety. According to AARP's 2024 Home and Community Preferences national survey, the majority of American adults aged 50 and older wish to remain in their current homes and communities for as long as possible.

Key recommendations for maintaining independence include modifying home layouts to allow essential daily activities to be completed on a single floor, such as moving primary bedrooms or laundry rooms downstairs to avoid stairs. Additionally, creating accessible bathrooms is a priority for safety, as UCLA Health estimates that 80% of falls in the home occur in the bathroom.
