US home repair costs rise due to labor and material inflation
Homeowners in the United States are facing rising costs for property repairs and exterior renovations. According to data from TheZebra.com and ConsumerAffairs, repair prices are expected to continue increasing through 2026 due to several economic factors, including labor shortages, rising wages for specialty contractors, and increased transportation and insurance costs.
Material costs are also a significant driver of inflation in the sector. Tariffs on aluminum, steel, and copper have reached 50%, contributing to a median 6.7% increase in material costs reported by the National Association of Home Builders. Additionally, supply chain pressures and higher fuel prices continue to impact the industry.
Regarding aesthetic trends, the 2026 Houzz Outdoor Trends Study indicates a shift toward warmer exterior palettes. Beige has become the most popular wall color, rising to 24% popularity, while black has emerged as the leading trim color at 39%. Professional hiring for outdoor renovations has also increased, with 71% of homeowners now enlisting professional help.
