Home rodent prevention and detection methods
As temperatures drop in autumn, rodents such as rats and mice increasingly seek shelter and food inside residential buildings. To prevent infestations, homeowners can implement several DIY defense strategies.
For rats, which can squeeze through openings as small as two centimeters, standard materials like polyurethane foam, polystyrene, or silicone are ineffective as they can be easily gnawed through. More durable solutions include using steel or copper wool to plug crevices, installing galvanized wire mesh (with a maximum hole size of 1 cm) on basement windows, and using quick-setting cement for foundations. Additionally, installing storm flaps on drainpipes and metal collars on gutters can block access via sewage and facades.
To detect mouse activity, homeowners can use aluminum foil as a monitoring tool. By placing pieces of foil along walls, behind furniture, or near pipes, residents can check for movement in the morning. If the foil has been shifted or crumpled, it serves as a clue to the rodents' paths, helping to narrow down areas for further inspection.
