Home security debate over leaving keys in door locks
Home security experts and locksmiths offer differing perspectives on the practice of leaving keys in front door locks. One school of thought suggests that leaving a key slightly turned in a Euro cylinder lock can prevent intruders from using tools to push the inner key out and manipulate the mechanism. This method aims to jam the cam at an angle, making it harder for a skilled intruder to rotate the lock from the outside.
However, other security professionals warn against leaving keys in doors entirely. They argue that keys can be manipulated through letterboxes or windows, and that having a key in the lock may actually facilitate forced entry by providing a point of leverage for specialized tools. Additionally, leaving keys in doors can pose risks during emergencies, such as fires, by obstructing quick exits, or create safety hazards for children.
Data suggests that while lockpicking is a method used by some, it accounts for a very small percentage of burglaries compared to more violent methods like kicking in doors or breaking glass. Most domestic break-ins occur quickly, often within a twenty-minute window.
