Home security: Mechanical reinforcements deter burglars
Security experts and police recommend mechanical reinforcements for windows and doors to deter burglars, noting that nearly half of all attempted break-ins fail due to secured entry points. Because criminals often seek quick access, creating mechanical resistance can force them to abandon their attempts.
According to the Verband Fenster + Fassade (VFF), security is categorized by resistance classes. The RC2 class is designed to withstand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, and wedges for at least three minutes. The higher RC3 class provides increased protection, resisting heavier tools like crowbars for at least five minutes.
The choice of security level depends on factors such as visibility and accessibility of the entry points. The Polizeiliche Kriminalprävention der Länder und des Bundes (ProPK) emphasizes that all security measures must be professionally installed and offers resources to find specialized manufacturers and contractors.
