Home security risks of leaving keys in door locks overnight

Leaving a key in a door lock from the inside overnight may provide a false sense of security and can lead to significant complications. While intended to ensure quick access during emergencies, this practice does not necessarily prevent burglaries, as many locks can still be drilled or manipulated even with a key inserted.

Modern lock cylinders often feature an emergency function that allows them to be opened from the outside with a second key even if one is inserted on the inside. However, older locks may lack this feature. In such cases, an internal key can block emergency services or family members from gaining entry with a spare key, potentially necessitating expensive locksmith services during nighttime emergencies.
