Home Wi‑Fi speed boosted by router settings and Smart Connect
Improving home Wi‑Fi performance starts with proper router placement: locate the device in a central, elevated, unobstructed area and avoid thick walls, mirrors, metal furniture and appliances that can weaken the signal. Choose the appropriate frequency band—2.4 GHz for greater range and wall penetration, 5 GHz for higher speeds over shorter distances, and consider the newer 6 GHz band if supported. Enabling the router’s Smart Connect (also called band steering) merges both bands under a single SSID and automatically directs each device to the best band, helping to deliver the full contracted speed.
Additional steps include updating firmware, securing the network with WPA2/WPA3 passwords, limiting the number of active devices, and using wired connections for bandwidth‑intensive equipment such as consoles or PCs. For larger homes, a compatible mesh system can extend coverage without creating conflicting networks.
