Homelab management through DNS and Bashtard configuration
A developer is refining homelab management by implementing the Domain Name System (DNS) to map human-readable hostnames to IP addresses. This approach replaces the manual coding of host-to-IP mappings previously used in Ansible inventories, allowing for easier host discovery without memorizing specific IPv4 or IPv6 addresses.
Additionally, the developer has created Bashtard, a Bash-based configuration management tool designed to be more lightweight and less convoluted than Ansible. Bashtard uses Bash scripts, referred to as 'aplaybooks', to manage system package managers, service managers, and logging. It supports per-host and per-OS configurations, making it compatible with varied operating systems such as Gentoo, Debian, and FreeBSD.
