France: Collective reports 927 homeless deaths in 2025
The collective ‘Les Morts de la rue’ has released an annual report documenting at least 927 deaths among homeless individuals in France in 2025. While this figure is slightly lower than the 938 deaths recorded in 2024, the collective warns that the number has more than doubled since their counting began in 2012. They emphasize that this figure represents a documented floor rather than an exhaustive total, due to a lack of comprehensive data.
The report highlights a significant demographic profile: the average age of the deceased was 49, significantly lower than the general population average of approximately 79.5 years. The victims were predominantly men (83%), though the proportion of women is increasing. Among those whose causes of death were known, approximately three out of five experienced violent deaths, including homicides, drownings, and suicides. Additionally, 22 deaths were attributed to cold weather, and at least 20 victims were minors under the age of 15.
Geographically, the deaths are widespread across 78 French departments, with the Île-de-France region accounting for 355 of the recorded deaths. The collective notes that while deaths in the Pas-de-Calais region decreased, mortality rates rose in most other parts of the country.
