Homeowners advised to protect water pipes from frost damage
As frost periods approach, homeowners are advised to inspect and protect water pipes located outside the heated building envelope. Vulnerable areas include outdoor faucets, garden lines, irrigation systems, and connections in unheated spaces such as garages, basements, and garden sheds.
To prevent damage, it is recommended to disconnect garden hoses, couplings, or distributors that might prevent pipes from draining completely. For standard outdoor faucets, the shut-off valve inside the building should be closed, and the outdoor tap should be left open to allow residual water to drain. While frost-proof fixtures exist, they still require proper maintenance and should not be blocked by attached hoses.
Risks extend beyond visible outdoor taps to pipes in unheated rooms, attics, or those running close to cold exterior walls. Damage from frozen sections often remains undetected until thawing occurs, when water leaks from cracks. Experts suggest identifying frost-prone sections, maintaining adequate temperatures in used areas, and ensuring outdoor lines are fully emptied. Any significant modifications to drinking water installations should be handled by professional contractors.
