Homeowners advised to use simple DIY tests to prevent heat loss

To combat rising energy costs, experts suggest several low-cost methods for identifying and fixing drafts in homes before winter.

One method involves checking door hardware. DIY expert John McGrath suggests adjusting the small round pins on door handles; rotating these pins toward the door can create a tighter seal against the frame, known as a 'winter setting.' Additionally, homeowners should inspect rubber seals around doors and windows for cracks or compression.

Another technique is the 'paper test' for windows. By placing a sheet of paper in a window and closing it, homeowners can check the seal's integrity; if the paper slides out easily, the seal is likely insufficient. While draft-proofing strips can be a solution, experts from Travis Perkins note that some issues may require professional adjustments or replacements to ensure the correct fix is applied.
