Homeowners Confront Hidden First-Year Expenses

First‑time homebuyers are encountering unexpected costs that can total around $16,000 in the first year of ownership. A recent analysis by Zillow and Thumbtack found that homeowners insurance, routine maintenance and property taxes together represent a significant financial burden, far exceeding many buyers' expectations.

Insurance premiums have risen sharply, climbing 48 % over the past five years and outpacing household‑income growth. The Zebra reports average premiums increasing from $2,692 to $2,887, and nearly half of surveyed owners say a rise in insurance costs would make mortgage payments difficult. Analysts such as Beth Swanson of The Zebra warn that buyers often stop researching after meeting lender requirements, overlooking add‑on coverages like sewer backup or service‑line protection that can further raise costs. Rate quotes given at closing may not reflect renewal rates, which can jump suddenly.

Homeowners are advised to budget for these hidden expenses, review policy details regularly, and consider supplemental coverage to avoid financial strain.
