Homeowners avoid insurance claims to protect property premiums
Homeowners are increasingly opting to pay for property repairs out of pocket to avoid the long-term consequences of filing insurance claims. Because claims can remain attached to a property for up to seven years, a pattern of frequent claims can lead to higher premiums, non-renewal of policies, or negative impacts on future property sales.
This trend is particularly evident in roofing and restoration work. According to research from Verisk, residential roof-related claims accounted for a quarter of all residential claim value in 2024. The total cost for roof repairs and replacements reached $31 billion, representing an approximate 30 percent increase from 2022. To mitigate risks associated with wind and hail damage, many owners are choosing full replacements and resilient materials over repeated patch repairs to protect their insurance standing.
