Homeplus faces staff exodus and looming bankruptcy with possible store closures in South Korea
South Korea’s Homeplus is confronting a deepening crisis after a Seoul court revoked its corporate rehabilitation plan. The decision has accelerated staff departures, especially among outsourced workers responsible for parking, cleaning and facility management. Remaining employees are now handling these tasks, leading to safety concerns and disrupted operations.
The retailer’s supply chain is strained, with fresh food and alcohol deliveries halted and unpaid invoices preventing sales of stocked goods. Store aisles display "product change in progress" signs, while only a fraction of checkout lanes remain open. Homeplus continues heavy discounting of its private‑label Simple Plus line, but the situation has raised fears that the chain could shut down up to 67 outlets and jeopardize around 10,000 jobs.
Homeplus has been given until March 20 to secure roughly 200 billion won in emergency financing; failure to do so would trigger formal bankruptcy proceedings. Negotiations with major creditor Meritz Financial remain stalled, and unions warn that a bankruptcy could leave many workers without severance.
The episode highlights the vulnerability of large retailers to financial distress and labor unrest, with potential repercussions for South Korean consumers and the domestic retail sector.
